Why do I need over 60s travel insurance?

Travel insurance can help us feel more confident and safe on holiday. It provides a safety net against the cost of medical bills, travel cancellation, lost property, and more. And, as we age, having some extra security can feel more important than ever - especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.

However, finding the right travel insurance can feel tricky. Some providers put age limits in place and many older travellers like visiting destinations where the cost of healthcare is expensive.

With Age Co Travel Insurance, those over 60 can still travel with confidence. Our coverage has no upper age limits in place. We also cover 99% of pre-existing medical conditions and offer worldwide options, helping you get more out of later life.

What does over 60s travel insurance cover?

Age Co works in partnership with AllClear, who were carefully selected as our travel insurance provider for the benefits they provide to over 60s holiday-goers.

  • Cover for over 1,300 different pre-existing medical conditions
  • No upper age limit
  • Covid cover included with every policy
  • 24/7 medical assistance is included as standard
  • Up to unlimited emergency medical and repatriation cover
  • UK, Europe and Worldwide cover options to choose from
  • Cover for cancellations and travel delays
  • Protection for personal items and medical equipment

What’s not covered by over 60s travel insurance?
Regardless of age, it’s important to be honest with your provider and make sure you read through the terms of your policy carefully. If a medical condition isn’t declared, then you may find your policy invalid and your claim facing rejection. Even if a health issue arises after your policy has been taken out, you still must disclose this to your provider.

How much will over 60s travel insurance cost?

The price of your travel insurance will depend on a number of different factors, including:

Your destination: those associated with high medical expenses, such as the USA, may require a more expensive premium.

Length of trip: as the longer you are away, the more likely it is that a claim might be made.

Pre-existing conditions: while your medical history might not prevent you from securing an insurance policy, it will likely affect the price.

Type of policy: it can be more cost-effective to choose an annual plan if you plan on enjoying two or more holidays in a year.

Annual Cover

If you’re over 60 and have three or more trips planned for the year, annual cover could be a cost-effective solution for your travels. You’ll save time on taking out multiple single-trip policies, while still being protected by a comprehensive insurance product.

Age Co’s annual travel insurance is available for a range of trips, including beach holidays and snowy getaways. With our customisable cover levels, you can select the coverage that gives you the confidence to explore the world.

Single Trip Cover

As the name suggests, this kind of policy is designed to protect you during a single holiday. It can be a great option for those over 60 who only have one or two trips planned for the year. Even if your policy is single trip, your coverage will extend to medical emergencies, lost or damaged personal possessions, and unexpected cancellations.

Single-trip travel insurance can be purchased up to 12 months before your departure, allowing you to benefit from our cancellation cover far in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Is over 60s travel insurance more expensive?

Prices will vary due to a number of different factors, including:

  • Medical history
  • Where you plan on travelling to
  • Length of your trip

However, on the whole, you will find the cost of travel insurance starts to go up once you hit 65. This doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find quality protection for a fair price. Age Co Travel Insurance doesn’t have an upper age limit for any of our cover levels. But, if you are worried about price, it's always worth comparing the market and assessing whether any changes to your holiday could help bring costs down.

Can I be insured against coronavirus if I’m over 60?

Yes, many providers will still include protection against costs relating to Covid-19 in their coverage. With Age Co Travel Insurance, travellers over 60 can benefit from our coronavirus safeguards, which include:

  • Cancellation costs will be covered, should you or a member of your travelling party contract Coronavirus within 14 days of your scheduled departure.
  • Covid-19 treatment while on holiday, including up to unlimited in emergency care costs.
  • If a member of your immediate family is hospitalised or passes away due to Coronavirus, the cost of ending your trip early will be covered.
Does over 60s travel insurance cover golf?

This will vary between providers. Some may include it as part of their standard product, but most will offer it as an optional extra. At Age Co, we want you to feel in control of your travel insurance and allow golf cover to be added, should you need it, to any of our cover levels. This lets both you and your equipment receive quality protection when aboard.

Are cruise holidays covered by over 60s travel insurance?

Some travel insurance providers will offer over 60s travellers cruise cover as part of their standard product - otherwise, it may be offered as an optional extra. Together with AllClear, Age Co Travel Insurance can create an insurance plan that covers the specifics of travelling on a cruise ship, such as:

  • Missed port departure
  • Cabin confinement
  • Itinerary change

You can add cruise protection to an Age Co Gold Plus policy, and it’s included as standard on our Platinum level.

Can someone else join your Travel Insurance policy if they're under 60?

If you choose Age Co Travel Insurance, you can add a friend or family member to your policy - no matter what age they might be.

Having your travelling companions on the same policy can be a great option for a trip. For example, if you both benefit from the same cancellation cover, it can make the claims process that much easier and give you both the same peace of mind.

Does being over 60 affect how long you can travel for?

There are some points to bear in mind when mapping out the length of your next trip. Firstly, the longer you plan on being away, the more expensive your premium will become, as there’s a greater chance of a claim being made. Alongside this, there are differences between single trip and annual cover.

With Age Co Travel Insurance, you will be able to travel for up to:

  • 365 days on a single trip Travel Insurance policy
  • 45 days per trip on annual multi-trip policies - with the option to extend up to 55 days

As with all things related to travel insurance, it’s best to detail everything you can regarding your plans to a provider. They’ll then ensure you get the right protection for your trip.
